The Possible Role Of Physiotherapy In Health Management

Medical professionals rely on four broad approaches to manage injuries, diseases and other conditions. These approaches encompass medication, surgery, psychology and physiotherapy, forming a comprehensive quartet of methodologies.

Interestingly, the significance of physical rehabilitation has deep historical roots, dating back to the practices of ancient physicians. Throughout history, physiotherapy has been acknowledged as a pivotal element in the journey to recovery. It is no different today.

Orthopaedic issues affecting mobility, function and well-being, are among the world’s most widespread health complaints, often requiring physical therapy and intervention in the form of exercise, massage, and manipulation to complement other medical treatments.

Services Offered At Physiotherapy Clinics

Physiotherapy clinics provide a variety of specialised services to address various musculoskeletal and physical health needs. These services are delivered by a team of dedicated physiotherapists who focus on tailored therapy sessions to aid with the management of pain.

Some of the services include:

  • Ankle Sprain Physiotherapy: Ankle sprain physiotherapy aids with recovery and mitigates the risk of future injuries. It can also help support strengthening through proprioceptive exercises to address pain and help with the return to sports.
  • Foot and Ankle PhysiotherapyCommon causes of foot and ankle pain encompass ill-fitting footwear, overuse, and high-impact sports participation. Conditions like flat feet may also contribute to ankle discomfort. Effective foot and ankle physiotherapy sessions involve joint mobilisation, soft tissue massage, ultrasound therapy, amongst others to aid with pain management.
  • Elbow PhysiotherapyElbow, wrist, or hand discomfort is a common occurrence in many individuals. Seeking timely intervention through elbow physiotherapy is essential to manage and address these issues, preventing their progression and promoting healing for your elbow, wrist, or hand injury.
  • Shoulder PhysiotherapyShoulder discomfort can significantly impact one’s daily life, causing inconvenience and discomfort. While certain shoulder issues may naturally resolve, others may worsen over time if left untreated. However, there are various methods to manage painful symptoms, including medication and shoulder physiotherapy sessions.
  • Knee PhysiotherapyKnee pain, a prevalent musculoskeletal issue affecting individuals of all ages, manifests as discomfort or pain within the knee joint. This condition can result from various factors, including overuse, incorrect exercise form, and osteoarthritis. Effective knee pain management involves both surgical and non-surgical approaches. The latter, for example, through a personalised knee pain physiotherapy plan, individuals may experience some level of improvements in knee flexibility, range of motion, and a possible reduction in discomfort.
  • Urinary Incontinence Management: Urinary incontinence, a condition characterised by the loss of bladder control, is more prevalent among females. Physiotherapists can possibly offer various ways to manage urinary incontinence. These may include Kegel and pelvic muscle strengthening exercises, which target essential pelvic muscles related to bladder control and may involve personalised at-home exercise programmes.
  • Neck Pain PhysiotherapyNeck pain is a prevalent concern among Singaporean patients, stemming from various potential causes. Unlike injuries affecting extremities where rest can be easily applied, neck injuries pose challenges due to their central location. Consequently, untreated neck issues may worsen over time, leading to heightened discomfort, pain, and disruptions in daily life. Neck pain physiotherapy can help identify the root causes of neck pain and provide pain management strategies.

What can I expect during a physiotherapy session?

During a physiotherapy session, you can expect a comprehensive evaluation and therapy process. The session typically begins with your physiotherapist gathering information about your condition through clinical questions and health history. They will assess various aspects, including your posture and range of motion, and perform strength and flexibility tests. Relevant special Orthopaedic tests may also be conducted.

Based on the evaluation, a personalised plan of care will be discussed to align with your specific health goals. The therapy may involve techniques like soft tissue and joint mobilisation, as well as the use of modalities such as ultrasound, shockwave therapy, or electrical therapy, depending on your condition.

How do I find the right physiotherapist?

Finding the right physiotherapist for your needs involves some key considerations. Begin by ensuring that the physiotherapist is registered with the appropriate professional council in your region, such as the Allied Health Professionals Council (AHPC) in Singapore. This ensures they adhere to the highest standards of care and professionalism.

Next, consider the specific expertise you require. Physiotherapists often specialise in various disciplines, including musculoskeletal, orthopaedic, sports, neurological, cardiorespiratory, women’s health, and manual lymphatic drainage. Depending on your condition or goals, you may want to seek a physiotherapist with expertise in the relevant area.

It’s also beneficial to inquire about their experience and background, including any additional certifications or training that may be relevant to your needs. Feel free to contact the clinic or physiotherapy centre to gather more information about their team and their areas of specialisation. This way, you can make an informed decision and choose the right physiotherapist to best address your specific requirements.
